I met her in 1991 or 92 at UCSC when she came to a tiny lit class I was taking. The prof was a friend of hers and we read Bastard in that class. She told us that she and her partner bought their house with the money from her book, and that they called it “the house that bastard bought.” She’s an amazing voice and writer
Hi Iris. This was really cool to read. I remember reading Bastard Out of Carolina and being floored by it. I didn't realize the author lived not far from where I live now. What a stroke of luck that you were there to partake in this donated collection, and as another reader said, great point about how they weren't catalogued first.
This is really lovely, Iris! Such a great point you make about the fact that the titles of the books in her library were not listed before they began to be sold. Thank you for doing a bit of that. for your readers So appreciate all you're up to with this Substack.
Mighty cool to find those passages underlined in her book before she'd even published Bastards.
